Frame Selection Guide

Frame Selection

How to repurpose your existing frame

PICK A FRAME WITH STYLE

Select a frame that matches your artwork, and shows your style. If the artwork is fancy, pick a simple frame of a solid color that accents the colors and lets the art be the highlight. Or, pick a frame that augments the artwork by adding extra pizzazz

MEASURING THE FRAME OPENING

Check the Frame's "opening" area. Is it standard?
A standard picture frame has an opening that is 1/2" smaller than the picture size. For example, a 5"x7" frame has a 4.5"x6.5" opening. It may be helpful to measure the opening (viewable area) to make sure our insert will fit through the opening

STORE FRAME GUIDES

Pick a frame with style!

  • You can select most standard frames from Michaels (see Tip 1), and replace the glass.
  • You can also use Michael's 5 x 7 shadowbox.
  • You can use most frames from Hobby Lobby.
  • You can use Hobby Lobby's Open Frames that don't have glass. (Hint - You'll also need some type of backer, like foam board)
  • You can use many frames from the Dollar Store, but make sure they don't have matting. Their matting is not sturdy and has to be removed, leaving the frame an odd size opening that won't work. But if the frame does NOT have matting, the Dollar store frames work nicely!
  • Some standard Amazon frames are actually 8.5 x 11 instead of 8x10, so be careful on Amazon! Also, the standard Amazon-basics frames may have the glass glued in place (so we avoid those)

USING WITH SHADOWBOXES

Increase the depth of a regular shadowbox with a Clear ShadowBox! Some regular shadowboxes have replaceable glass (And some do NOT!). In some cases (like the Michael's 5x7 shadowbox), simply remove 4 screws to release the glass. Replace the glass and gain over an inch of extra space! (See our Sea Shells and Space Shuttle Shadowbox for examples of using a Michael's shadowbox with a Clear Shadowbox)
